TINYSTUFF 3.3 and TINYVIEW 4 by David Mumper
Copyright (c) 1987 by David Mumper
Nov 3, 1987
This version of TinyStuff is for the personal use of donators ONLY.
Please do not distribute it in any form. The TinyDemo and the
TinyViewer are public domain.
Organization
------------
The new version of TinyStuff is organized into 3 major menu types, with
the requisite 'about' option in the Desk menu. The three menus are used
to select any options, choose the Source format of the pictures, and
choose the destination format of the pictures respectively. Currently
there are 9 Source, and 6 Destination formats available.
Menus
-----
The following are the descriptions and special information pertaining to
each of the menu options.
Desk:About Tiny...
------------------
The About Tiny menu option is a way for me to get a little ad in :-). In
addition to this, it also show the user the amount of memory available
for use in the picture conversion process. This amount is approximately
1/2 the total system available memory, and is the maximum amount usable
by a source file. (i.e. a PC Paintbrush picture can be many Meg in
size. Therefore, the compressed version of the picture can be no larger
than the amount shown in the box, and the decompressed version can not
be larger than double that.)
Options:Compressed
------------------
Compressed is one of the 'under construction' options in the menus. It
is intended to be a compress function just like that in Picswitch.
Options:Convert Res...
----------------------
The Convert Res option is to allow you to convert pictures from one
resolution to another. You may convert Low to Mono, Medium to Low or
Mono, and Mono to Medium or Low.
The conversions to Monochrome use a dithering technique which comes in
two types. The first type is just taking the absolute luminence of each
color and produce a dither pattern dependant on how right it is in
reference to total black and total white. The second type changes the
reference points for the dither to the darkest and lightest colors on
the picture, which would give you the maximum amount of contrast. The
first type takes about 10 seconds and the second around 18 seconds.
When converting to Mono, you will be asked which of the 2 types you
desire. In most cases the quicker version (FULL) will work identically
to the slower (PARTIAL). This is because most pictures actually use
both Black and White, the only pictures that will improve are those that
don't use both. You can select the type for all Low res and all Medium
res conversions seperately.
Options:Display Pic
-------------------
The Display Pic option causes the program to display the pictures on the
screen as they are converted. This option is over-ridden in some
picture types. (i.e. The MacPaint load will display the pictures
regardless of the setting because you have to choose the portion of the
picture you want.) All pictures will be displayed on the color monitor
if this option is ON. This option defaults to ON on the color monitor
and OFF on the monochrome monitor.
Options:Display Name
--------------------
The Display Name option causes the program to display the pictures name
in a dialog box on the screen as the picture is converted. The name
will be displayed for both the source and destination file. The path is
not included. This option and the Display Pic option may both be used
at the same time.
Options:Delete Original
-----------------------
This option allows you to convert pictures on disks with minimal free
space. It will delete the original ONLY after the destination file is
successfully written. It will also delete the original even if it is
Locked, although it won't delete it if the source disk is write
protected.
Options:Convert All
-------------------
The Convert All option will convert all pictures of the Source Format
into pictures of the Destination format using the Paths last specified.
When the program is first executed, the default path for both the Source
and Destination files is the same as that which the program was run
from. If you have used the Convert Some option since executing the
program, the paths you chose then will be used for Source and
Destination, though the filename will be *.typ, where typ is the proper
extender for the source type.
Options:Convert Some
--------------------
The Convert Some option lets you specify specific files, and/or
drive/path changes for the Source and Destination pictures. The program
will bring up an File Selector box for the Source pictures. At this
point you can change the path and drive just like normal, and enter in
the filename to use for conversion. The filename can contain wildcard
characters (* for multiple characters, and ? for single characters, just
like normal) in both filename and extension. You must supply some type
of Filename. After you have selected the files to convert, press
RETURN, or use the OK button. If you have changed your mind, you can
now select the CANCEL button.
After entering the Source information, you will be presented with a File
Selector Box for the Destination information. The Path is the only
thing that really matters here, you need not enter anything in for a
filename. Use the OK button, or the RETURN key to begin the conversion
process, or use the CANCEL button to abort.
Convert:Quit
------------
This option will exit the program and place you back at the GEM desktop.
Source:Tinyview
---------------
This option converts loads all Tiny files. It expects an extender of
.TN?, where the ? is any valid character (Normally it is Y, 1, 2, 3, 4,
or 5.)
Source:Degas Normal
-------------------
This option will load any Normal D.E.G.A.S. picture. This includes the
32034, and 32066 length files written by either D.E.G.A.S. or D.E.G.A.S.
Elite or any of the other programs that write files usable in either of
these programs.
Source:Degas Compressed
-----------------------
This option will load any compressed D.E.G.A.S. picture. This includes
the pictures written by D.E.G.A.S. Elite and the Computer Eyes Software
(Naughty boy JAKOB, you cheat!) Pictures are variable in size but
shouldn't be smaller than 866 bytes.
Source:Neochrome
----------------
This option will load any Neochrome compatible pictures. This includes
Medium res and Monochrome pictures (that NEO will not load.) Again, it
will handle most pictures created by Public domain conversion programs.
Files should be 32128 bytes in size or larger.
Source:Doodle
-------------
This loads 32000 bytes data files created by programs such as Doodle.
These files are just screen data, without the color or resolution
information. The picture is displayed in the current resolution using
the current color palette.
Source:IFF
----------
This option is 'under construction', though I doubt I will implement it
due to the Excelent conversions that Bruce Holloway's program does.
Source:MacPaint
---------------
This option allows you to load Macintosh MacPaint pictures. When you've
loaded the picture, you will be able to scroll the picture around on the
screen so you can select the portion of the picture to use. When you
are satisfied with the picture, press the left mouse button to fix it in
place and save it. MacPaint pictures are always interpreted as
Monochrome.
Source:Mac Startup
------------------
This option allows you to load Macintosh Startup screens. Again these
pictures are always interpreted as Monochrome.
Source:PC Paintbrush
--------------------
This option allows you to load pictures from PC Paintbrush (an IBM
program) pictures. This format is also used by some Image Scanners on
the IBM PC's. Because these pictures can be in excess of 8 Megabytes in
size, not all of them will load on a standard ST :-). I have used this
on Monochrome pictures, but cannot guarantee that it works for all
formats (EGA, CGA, etc.) because I could only get a couple of pictures.
In order to facilitate usage of these large files, you are able to
scroll over the entire screen. If you wish, you can use the right mouse
button to perform a 50% compression (both Horizontal and Vertical) on
monochrome pictures. Again, as in the MacPaint option, the left mouse
button will save the picture.
Source:All
----------
This is an option that allows you to mix any of the other 8 formats on
one disk, and convert all of the pictures at once. Any picture that is
already in the Destination format is ignored.
Dest:Tinyview
-------------
This writes Tinyview format files. The file extender is set to .TN?
where the '?' is 1, 2, or 3 depending on the resolution (Low, Med, or
Mono) and has a 3 added to it if the picture is rotating. (Note: As of
today, I have 3747 pictures and Tiny is running an average compression
of 56% savings or an average file size of 14,111.308 bytes.)
Dest:Degas Normal
-----------------
This writes D.E.G.A.S. uncompressed files. This is in the D.E.G.A.S.
Elite format which includes rotation information for the first set of
cycling colors only.
Dest:Degas Compressed
---------------------
This option is 'Under Construction' until such time as I adjust Tiny to
handle the 4 rotation setup.
Dest:Neochrome
--------------
This option will write a Neochrome format file. It ignores the
resolution restriction of Neo, so it will write Medium and Monochrome
pictures to this format.
Dest:Doodle
-----------
This option will write out only the Picture image information, the color
palette and the resolution information is dropped.
Dest:Nvision
------------
This option is 'Under Construction' and is intended as a way to save
double height MacPaint pictures into the Page format of Nvision.
Dest:IFF
--------
This option is 'Under Construction'
Dest:MacPaint
-------------
This option will write out a picture usable by MacPaint. It should only
be used on Monochrome pictures, and will allow you to move margin bars
to determine which parts will be truncated from the left and right sides
of the screen. This will create a half-height picture for use in
MacPaint.
Dest:PC Paintbrush
------------------
This allows you to write pictures in PC Paintbrush format usable by PC
Paintbrush on the IBM PC. The pictures color information is lost due
the the color restrictions on the IBM PC.
What's going on
---------------
As the picture is being converted, watch the mouse cursor. It will
change to a different icon to represent what the program is doing. You
will see icons for File Access, Decompression, Compression, Bit Plane
Mixing, Histogram production, and Dithering.
In the TinyDemo, all the output options are disabled, but the menu
remains unchanged so you can see which ones are available on the actual
version of TinyStuff. In addition, when the end of the directory is
reached, the program will cycle back to the beginning. Thus it's
actually a picture display program for any and all of the source
formats.
